Three Suns / Book Design

Brief /

胡農欣，一位來自台灣桃園，目前居住在紐約的藝術家，決定將她 2017 至 2019 年間的作品整理出版成書。我當時協助設計團隊，通過多次與胡農欣的深入討論，了解她的創作理念和作品概念。經過團隊內部的反覆溝通與調整，最終達成了所有人都滿意的結果。這本書在 2023 年榮獲了金點設計獎的肯定，作為團隊的一員，我深感榮幸。

Hu Nung-Hsin, an artist from Taoyuan, Taiwan, currently residing in New York, decided to compile and publish her works from 2017 to 2019 in book form. I assisted the design team at that time by engaging in multiple in-depth discussions with Hsu to understand her creative ideas and the concepts behind her works. Through iterative internal communication and adjustments within the team, we achieved a result that satisfied everyone. The book was also honored with the 2023 Golden Pin Design Award. As a member of the team, I feel deeply honored.

Concept /

2017年，在北極圈駐村前，胡農欣於紐約市立圖書館聆聽了奧拉維爾・埃利亞松的演講，啟發了她的「蒐集太陽」計畫。隨後三年，她在不同的場域蒐集了三道日光：北極的荒誕冒險、離開台灣時的夕陽嘆息，以及冰島永晝的午夜陽光。

這些日光被轉化為電力，並以16毫米膠卷拍攝成影像，投射出九個故事章節，交織著「遙遠他方」與「家」的意象。透過膠卷、錄像、雕塑、聲音和文字，探索了夢想遠方的疑惑、對抗遺忘的徒勞，以及自由的刻度。

書末的24格太陽膠卷，代表了電影播放中1秒鐘的長度，也是一段握在手中的昔日，透光觀看時，過去的影子重疊在遠方的風景中，隱約預示著未來的輪廓。

In 2017, before her residency in the Arctic Circle, Hsu Nung-Hsin attended a lecture by Olafur Eliasson at the New York Public Library, which inspired her “Sunlight Collection” project. Over the next three years, she collected sunlight from different environments: the absurd adventure in the Arctic, the sigh of the sunset when leaving Taiwan, and the midnight sun of Iceland’s perpetual daylight.

This sunlight was converted into electricity and filmed using 16mm film, projecting nine chapters of stories that juxtapose the imagery of “distant places” and “home.” Through film, video, sculpture, sound, and text, the work explores the ambiguity of distant dreams, the futility of resisting oblivion, and the measure of freedom.

The 24 frames of sunlight film at the end of the book represent one second of movie playback, encapsulating a moment of the past that can be held in hand. When viewed against the light, the shadows of the past overlay the distant landscapes, hinting at the vague outline of the future.
